A Single Man

Synopsis: The most honored gay film of 2009, this movie is based on the Christopher Isherwood novel of the same name. A gay professor is heartbroken over the death of his partner and decides to kill himself.
Quick review: George Falconer (Colin Firth) is a British gay professor living in Southern California in the 1960s. His partner of 16 years, Jim (Matthew Goode), died in an auto accident and George has been heartbroken ever since. He wasn't living, just going through the motions and hurting every day. On this day, he's decided to kill himself. It is only then that he starts to live again. The movie covers George's day and his preparations to die. But it also shows some hope of living. Two beautiful young men hit on George and remind him that though he is middle age, he can still attract companionship. His best friend Charley (Julianne Moore) reminds of the fun they have together. And one of his students (Nicholas Hoult) notices a subtle change to his professor and worries about him. The drama is the tension between George's desire to die and everyone else reminding him the reasons to keep on living. Firth earned a Best Actor Award at the BAFTA Awards and an Academy Award nomination. He's excellent, as is the rest of the cast. But what I enjoyed about this film was the portrayal of George's and Jim's relationship. It was more about the love and less about the lust. And you see the real pain George is going through dealing with his loss. When Charley, his best friend, says it wasn't a real relationship, you see George lose it a bit (with the British reserve). We need more films like this.
