Spinnin'
Year:
2007
Country:
Spain
Director:
Eusebio Pastrana
Starring:
Agustin Ruiz, Alejandro Tous, Olav Fernandez, Zoraida Kroley
Synopsis:
A gay couple considers becoming parents in this romantic comedy that is filled with some true oddball characters, lots of kisses, and a whole lot of people spinning around in circles.
Quick review:
First, I don't normally go for guys with beards, but Alejandro Tous is flat out adorable in this Spanish film. He plays Garate, who is in a relationship with Omar. It is Omar who wants to become a dad, but Garate has his doubts about fatherhood. Most of those could be traced back to his own rocky relationship with his soccer-loving father. Now, if the film has stuck with that as its premise this could have been a very good film, especially with Tous getting every gay man and probably straight woman falling for him. But instead, we get a whole lot of craziness mixed in. There are men running around spinning while wearing ballet skirts; we have a woman walking up to strangers and asking them to be her life partner; we have a lesbian about to lose her daughter; we have two assistants on a film project running around doing all sorts of bizarre things for no apparent reason; we get a side-story of a homeless man who likes to play games; we get another side story of newspaper vendor who knows his wife is cheating on him; then there's another side story of two cops trying to decide if they have anything in common. With all of that, you can tell this film is all over the place, united only by 101 kisses and everyone spinning. The film lacks focus and while it can be incredibly touching at times, you also get tired of hearing the same dialogue over and over and over again.
