Men for Sale

Year: 2010
Country: Canada
Director: Rodrique Jean
Starring: 11 male prostitutes in Montreal
Synopsis: A filmmaker spent a year talking to a group of male prostitutes working on the streets of Montreal, asking them to talk about their lives and profession.
Quick review: Did you ever wonder what the call boy really thinks of his client? Or how did that cute young thing end up on the street selling his ass? Or what's the craziest thing a client ever asked his prostitute to do? Director Rodrique Jean and his crew spent a year talking to 11 male sex workers in Montreal about their lives and they open up and tell all. Problem is, these men are a mess. They all have drug addictions, most of them are straight, and nearly all of them are lying to themselves. In one scene one man says he doesn't have a drug problem, that he has it under control. The next time he shows up he's a mess. Many claim they never allow a man to top them, and then later one prostitute basically says, "Sure they don't." When they want money to buy crack cocaine, they'll do whatever you ask. They just won't admit to it later. One says he hates to watch the porn videos he has made over and over, but can't wait to show it to the filmmaker. They all admit to betraying those close to them, stealing, assault. If you watch this film it is highly unlikely you will ever bring a sex worker back to your hotel or home. It's enlightening, but this film is way too long. It runs nearly 2.5 hours and by the end you've already figured out these men are hopeless cases and it's just painful to watch men who have lost so much control of their lives. I would have tried to cut at least 45 minutes from it. Disclaimer: The distributor provided me with an advance copy of the DVD to screen.
