Change of Life

Year: 2006
Country: USA
Director: Amy McClung
Starring: Denny Day, Alexis Pelfry, Vince Mollica
Synopsis: Imagine if a notorious homophobe, say the Rev. Fred Phelps, had a lesbian daughter and that she called his anti-gay radio show and announced that she's a lesbian. Then, she killed herself.
Quick review: Gary Catell is the film adaptation of the real-life anti-gay preacher Rev. Fred Phelps. In this story, he has his own radio show where he tells all gay people they are going to hell. After a young gay man is brutally murdered, Catell and his supporters stand across the street from the victim's family home, holding posters saying that Adam, the victim, is in hell now and using a speaker to quote Bible verses. Catell's daughter, Sarah, was a friend of the victim and his death has upset her greatly. And then when her girlfriend discovers who her father is, a fact she has not let anyone know, she is ordered out of her home and her life. Devastated by these two events, she calls her dad's radio show and announces she's his daughter, a lesbian and then puts a gun in her mouth and pulls the trigger, all on air. Then the film changes. Gary runs to a church and confronts his God, begging for a chance to change things. He's transported back in time into the body of Adam's lover. Now he has a chance to stop the murder and reconnect with his daughter to prevent her from killing herself while he learns about tolerance. This is a low-budget film and it has some huge holes in the plot. (For example, when Sarah's lover learns who her father is she ends the relationship in one reality, in the other her father comes up and holds her hand and all is forgiven). It tends to be preachy, and doesn't really give the audience the subtle context that is reality. The dialogue is filled with cliches. There is a hint of a good idea in here, and it might be worth exploring. But it wasn't pulled off in this case. Disclaimer: The distributor provided me with a copy of this DVD to screen.
