Rag Tag

Year: 2006
Country: UK
Director: Adaora Nwandu
Starring: Danny Parsons, Damola Adelaja, Tamsin Clarke, Geoffrey Aymer, Maria Adesioye
Synopsis: Best friends Rag and Tag are separated when they are 12 but never forget the other. Ten years later they are reunited and discover that they still feel passion, but can they overcome everything else?
Quick review: Tag is the good boy from the proper family who is being pushed by his parents to do something worthwhile with his life. He knows his Bible and also knows that it will be almost impossible to win his father's approval. His best friend Rag, however, has a harder life. His father is gone and his mother is neglectful. If it wasn't for his friendship with Tag and the fact that he spends many nights sleeping in his best friend's bed, his life would almost certainly end up poorly. But when they are 12 family services steps in and sends Rag away to live with his father. Fast forward 10 years and Rag is back. The first thing he does is look for Tag, who is still living in the same house and still can't fully please his father. Tag has studied to be a lawyer and is looking for work. Rag also is looking for a job and figures he has about a month to find one before he has to return to Birmingham. Tag also has a girlfriend and Rag has a child. Throw in some shady Nigerian characters who are looking for a lawyer of their own to deal with their legal problems and there's plenty of tension to keep the story interesting. One enjoyable moment in the film is when Rag and Tag travel to Nigeria to experience Tag's native culture and learn that his uncle, his father's twin brother, is gay and has had the same lover for many year. Both men are married to keep up appearances, but it's not really a secret to anyone how they feel. The film has poor lighting at points and the dialogue can be difficult to understand (thank you for the subtitles). My biggest complaint is that for two men who has a lifelong passion for each other would it have killed the actors to open their mouths when kissing? Still, it's a refreshing film that has originality. Disclaimer: The distributor of this film sent me a screener.
