Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story
Year:
1995
Country:
USA
Director:
Jeff Bleckner
Starring:
Glenn Close, Judy Davis, Jan Rubés, Wendy Makkena, Margarethe Cammermeyer
Synopsis:
This film is based on the actual experiences of Margarethe Cammermeyer, who at the time was the highest-ranked member of the military to come out and challenge the ban on gay men and lesbians serving openly.
Quick review:
It is always nice to see A-list stars, such as Glenn Close, play gay. This film shows the events that led Col. Margarethe Cammermeyer to be honorable discharged from the military and her subsequent lawsuit challenging the ban on gay men and lesbians serving their nation openly. A federal judge later ruled that the ban was unconstitutional and forced the military to accept her. She served as an open lesbian until she retired in 1997 and somehow the country did not crumble. What made her a great person to push this argument is that no one ever questioned her performance or abilities. She was a valued member of the military and a top-notch nurse. It forced the military to face its hypocrisy in demanding honesty and integrity, but then insisting that its gay members lie about who they are. Close and Judy Davis as her partner are excellent together. Their relationship brings the historical facts to life. It may have been a made-for-TV film, but it's worth checking out.
