The Naked Civil Servant

Year: 1980
Country: UK
Director: Jack Gold
Starring: John Hurt
Synopsis: This film is based on the first autobiography of Quentin Crisp, which made the flamboyant Brit famous for being, um, Quentin Crisp.
Quick review: Andrew Sullivan's great blog had a lively discussion recently (at the time of this writing) about all of the gay activists who were fighting for equal rights long before the Stonewall riots in 1969. Quentin Crisp's name did not come up, and that's not really a surprise. But what do we make of Crisp? He was born in 1908 and lived almost all of his 91 years as an obvious gay man. He wore makeup, he dyed his hair bright red, he wore the most flamboyant clothes and never once tried to hide who he was. And yet he often angered other gay men. First, because they were all in the closet and did not want to be outed by association. And second with some of the crazy things he said about being homosexual (it's a disease) and AIDS (it's a fad). John Hurt brought the legend of Quentin Crisp to life with this portrayal of Crisp and it was the film that made Crisp into a superstar. You have to admire him for the incredible courage it must have taken to live that life, with all the violence his appearance invited. But it's also very hard to understand him. Luckily, we have this film to help us try.
