Dirty Laundry

Synopsis: A gay man living in New York gets a surprise package that forces him to return to his small Georgia hometown to confront the family he thought he had left for good.
Quick review: In Ski Trip, Maurice Jamal made an entertaining film for black gay men. It was a debut that showed promise. In his second film, he's improved and is a welcome addition to a gay movie scene that doesn't have near enough films about black men. (In fact, it was my constant complaints about that subject that led a reader to recommend I check this film out). Rockmond Dunbar plays Patrick, a successful New York magazine writer who has a dream job, a dream boyfriend and a dream life. The dream ends when a 10-year-old boy arrives and says that Patrick is his father. He takes the boy back to Paris, Ga. and the family he has avoided to try and figure out what this is all about. There he must deal with his mother, sister, brother and the rest of a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business. It's hard not to think of this film as a gay Tyler Perry movie, with the crazy family and heavy does of religion. Throw in the humor and the fact the director is also on camera (he plays Patrick's brother -- in Ski Trip he played the lead), and the Tyler Perry comparisons are hard to avoid. But if Jamal is even a tenth as successful as Perry, more power to him. And the religion is true to the story, not something thrown in to beat you into submission (like Perry does). There are few surprises, and the Ellen Degeneres coming out scene is already cliche, but it's hard not to enjoy this film.
