Synopsis:
The parents of a 15-year-old intersex persons struggle with helping their daughter/son adjust to a world that usually isn't kind to those who are different. The arrival of a boy for a visit forces decisions for all three of them.
Quick review:
Alex is 15 years old and is intersex, having both male and female anatomy parts. She is living primarily as a woman, but it is obvious from the start that her family has been dealing with this issue all her life. They have moved to a secluded location to avoid as many people as possible. As the movie opens, things are coming to a breaking point. Alex's mother has invited a renowned surgeon and his family to visit, hoping that he will perform the surgery to remove Alex' penis. But Alex's father isn't on board. And Alex herself has decided to quit taking the hormones that make her appear feminine and is beginning to behave more and more like a man. The surgeon's son is along for the trip and does not know of Alex's condition. The meeting between these two may help both of them decide what it is they want out of life. I'm listing this in transgender, though that is not accurate. But gender issues it has aplenty. This is a smart film that tackles a difficult issue with compassion and integrity. There are the two parents struggling to do right by their daughter; the surgeon and his wife more intrigued by unique nature of the case than they are the emotions involved; and then the two young people, both trying to figure out who they are and what is it they want out of life.
