Quick review:
No one decides they want to be a troll when they grow up. And yet most of us know they are out there. This is not so much a boxing film as it is a troll film. The star isn't the fighter, Tommy Riley. It's his trainer, Marty. And the terrific performance Eddie Jones gives in the role makes this film stand apart. Marty is a sad, old man. He teaches English and is disappointed in his students. He regrets that his own boxing career never took off. He is haunted by the way the one star fighter he did train ended. And all of that pales to the fact that he's a gay man who has never come to terms with his sexual orientation. He and his business partner are looking for a new fighter and decide to check out a young up-and-comer. When that fighter gets his ass kicked by a nobody, Marty decides to make Tommy Riley the next big thing in fighting. The problem is that he's attracted to the much younger man. And while Tommy has a gorgeous face and washboard abs, Marty is well past his prime and hitting the upper limits on his Body Mass Index. But the two begin to work together and soon find success. But Tommy is straight and has a girlfriend. So Marty decides to take him away to a mountain cabin where they can be alone, to train. That includes giving the younger man rub downs after his workouts. Forget the boxing, that is clearly a side story. This is a film about one aging troll and his crusade to battle those demons. I suspect that every older guy who has lusted after a much younger man will find this film a bit disconcerting. It hits a little too close to home.
