Times Have Been Better (Le Ciel sur la tête)

Year: 2006
Country: France
Director: Régis Musset
Starring: Arnaud Binard, Bernard Le Coq, Charlotte De Turckheim, Franck de la Personne, Olivier Guéritée
Synopsis: Jérémy is about to move in with his boyfriend and decides it is finally time to tell him liberal parents that he is gay. While at first they say the right words, it is soon obvious they are struggling to accept him homosexuality.
Quick review: Most of you have no doubt seen scores of coming out gay movies. So why should you sign on for another? This film offers more than your traditional coming out tale, in that it is told primarily from the point of view of the parents. What were those conversations they had with each other after the news was delivered? How did they tell their friends? How did it change their lives? And while aspects of that are usually included in any coming out film, I haven't seen it done to this depth before. Jérémy is the perfect son who has just earned a big promotion and his left-leaning parents couldn't be more proud of him. He makes a surprise visit home on a Sunday to deliver the news, but waits until just before he's about to leave to do so. His parents, Rosine and Guy, say the words that any liberal parents would say in a moment of shock, but it's obvious that they don't mean them. For the next week Jérémy exits the screen and we get a look at the lives of Rosine and Guy and how the news impacts them. Rosine is mostly upset that her son has kept part of his life secret from her and wants to know what she missed. Guy struggles to accept the news, and one of his biggest worries is trying to resolve if his son is a top or a bottom. For those of us who have come out to our parents (or plan to), this film will probably connect with you because just like Jérémy, we're not around for the aftermath. Now we can be.
