Synopsis:
Guinevere Turner plays a wife and mother who is stuck married to an abusive man with a crazy family. Her only ally is her sister-in-law, a very butch woman who has secret desires of her own.
Quick review:
This is a depressing film. And despite the fact that lesbian-favorite Guinevere Turner is in the cast, lesbians looking for a nice lesbian film will likely be disappointed. This is mostly a film about a bad straight marriage. Turner plays Darla, a woman who left her home in South Carolina to marry into the Carter clan. They are poor, and her husband is a drunk and abusive pig. The rest of the family has made it clear that if she leaves her husband, her two boys will stay on their mountain. And there is no way the local judge would ever agree to Carter boys being raised somewhere else. So she is stuck in a bad relationship and awful circumstances. Jolene is her sister-in-law and pretty much the only good thing in her life, outside of her boys. Since her brother refuses to care for his family, Jolene takes on that responsibility. She is a mountain of a woman, and when you first see her you're not quite sure she is a woman, that's how butch she is. And it is clear almost from the start that Jolene is in love with Darla and wants the four of them, sans her brother, to be a family. Things come to a head after the husband is fired from his job and Darla decides to throw him out. She asks Jolene to stick around to keep him from going crazy. As if that would stop him. This is a sad, dark film. Outside of the terrific performances by the cast, there's little to recommend here unless you're in a mood to be depressed. Everyone else should probably avoid it.
