Country: Thailand
Director: Chukiat Sakveerakul
Starring: Jirayu La-ongmanee, Laila Boonyasak, Pimpan Buranapim, Sinjai Plengpanit, Songsit Roongnophakunsri
Synopsis: Two childhood friends who were separated when one moved away reunite as teens in this award-winning Thai family drama. It won that nation's best picture award and was its nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.
Quick review: Tong and Mew become friends while living next door. But a family tragedy leads to Tong's family moving away. Years later they run into each other on the streets of Bankok and the friendship returns. But it's very obvious to pretty much everyone except Tong, that Mew is hopelessly in love with him. Mew is now the lead singer and songwriter for a boy band and Tong is his muse. But Tong's family troubles have only gotten worse in the years that they've been apart and now those problems may once again force the two friends apart. When this film was released in Thailand they downplayed the gay angle and after its release it became controversial because of it. Still, critics and audiences loved this film, leading to it being named the Best Picture of Thailand. It was that nation's nominee for the Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film. It's a bit long, at 2.5 hours, but this is an excellent film and it's easy to see why it earned Thailand's top honor.
