I'll Love Your Forever, Tonight ...

Year: 1992
Country: USA
Director: Edgar Michael Bravo
Starring: Paul Marius, Jason Adams, David Poynter, Thomas Jane
Synopsis: A gay man in Los Angeles tries to deal with his loneliness and the unrequited love that he feels for his best friend through meaningless one-night stands. Then his best friend brings him to Palm Springs for a reunion with his ex from college.
Quick review: Disclaimer: I was sent a screener of this film. Ethan is a gay man living in Los Angeles who is still struggling with having been abused as a child. We meet him in this film taking home a man for a one-nighter. It's about this time that you realize this is a different type of gay movie. Have you ever been in a situation where you knew there was a conversation going on, but it was non-verbal? And you were pretty sure you were going to misunderstand what was actually being said. Speaking as someone who almost always gets it wrong, I hate those non-verbal conversations. This whole film is one long non-verbal conversation. There's a whole lot going on, but nobody is talking about it. Some of it is obvious, but others are a bit more subtle. And just like Ethan, you're not always sure you're getting the right meaning. Ethan's best friend drags him to Palm Springs for a reunion with his old college flame. Turns out that Ethan is the only guy there alone, everyone else has a partner. And put five gay men together in a house with lots of sun and a swimming pool, and you soon have drama. By the time they get back to Los Angeles, Ethan is sick of the guessing games and wants some straight answers. The film is shot in black and white and stars a young Thomas Jane, before he was the Punisher. It's a surprising gem, and I thought that before I realized it was released in 1992. How refreshing to see a gay film released in that era not about AIDS, or coming out, or any of the other cliches from that time. If only they had made more films like this one back then. Or, even today.
