Psychotropica

Year: 2009
Country: USA
Director: Damien Sage
Starring: Damien Sage, Braden West, Tiffany Titmouse, Maximillian Magick
Synopsis: A gay man is a patient being treated for something in this psychedelic film. A doctor gives him drugs and forces him to relive his nightmares, day after day, for five straight years.
Quick review: Disclaimer: The director provided me a screener of this film. Psychotropica starts with a man confessing his past to his lover. Then the audience is subjected to flashbacks of his past, or his nightmares, or his fantasies, who knows? The film is intentionally blurry, with bright colors and blanked out faces to add to the confusion. You won't know what is happening, just like the patient is unsure. The fancy camera techniques also try to hide what is basically a low budget film. But the over-the-top film school special effects drown out everything in this film. Maybe if you're tripping on acid, it's a sight to behold. But for me, I was just wishing it would stop. It's hard to build a connection to the characters when for the most part they are washed out shadows. And the one character that we do get to see and build a connection with, The Patient, is seen at different ages making it hard to identify with him. The great mystery is what is real, and what isn't. But even when you finally get to the end and understand the story, it still doesn't make sense. Seems like a lot of trouble to go through for a silly reason. Some bad movies are fun to watch because you can laugh at them. This isn't one of those. If you like loud threatening music and loads of pretty colors, maybe this is the film for you. Everyone else might want to look elsewhere.
