Quick review:
This is a short film, under an hour, and it deals with two different plots. That alone should tell you that it will leave you wanting more. The first story is of Cara and Janet, a lesbian couple that has been together for three years. Cara's Chinese family is about to fly into Vancouver for her brother's wedding and lament over her still being single. She has not come out to them. Janet's Japanese mother knows about their relationship and is still struggling to accept it. Just before the scheduled visit of Cara's parents, British Columbia legalizes same-sex marriages. Janet is excited and wants to get married, but Cara holds back. The other story centers on Jesse, a teen who has just come out to his family. His mother and step-father, Norman, are accepting. But Jesse's actual father, Daniel, is coming in for a visit and because he is gay, Norman worries that he is losing influence with his step-son. Nothing that a little Queer Eye for the Straight Guy can't cure. I had the feeling that the first story line was just a Cliff Notes version of a much better lesbian film, Saving Face, which is a much better film if you're interested in Asian lesbians and their relationships with their families. The second was cute, but predictable. Still, it's a feel good film if you look past all the overacting.
