Andre's Mother
Year:
1990
Country:
USA
Director:
Deborah Reinisch
Starring:
Richard Thomas, Sada Thompson
Synopsis:
Before Tony Kushner's epic Angels in America, playwright Terrence McNally did this story, about a mother and her son's partner trying to move on after the death of the man they both loved.
Quick review:
Terrence McNally has done a number of gay plays that have become films, including The Ritz, Love, Valour and Compassion and this film from 1990. It stars two actors who were well known from that era for being a mother and a son, Richard Thomas (John Boy Walton from The Waltons) and Sada Thompson (Family). Thomas plays Cal and Thompson plays Katherine. Their only connection to each other is Andre, Cal's partner and Katherine's son. It's clear from the start that Andre is dead (though there are many flashbacks to when Andre was alive) and that these two strangers are trying to connect so that they can mourn together. The audience sees a photo of Andre, and his back, but other than that he's not part of this show. Katherine has never accepted her son's homosexuality, but has decided to push it aside so that she can have a relationship with Andre. She tolerates Cal only as much as she has to. Cal obviously feels that strain and tries hard to overcome it. Still, he is direct and doesn't hold back much. In fact, everyone in the play, from Katherine's mother to a waiter speaks more directly than you'll probably find in everyday life. The exception is Katherine, who holds everything in. Andre dies of complications from AIDS and Katherine decides to have his body shipped back to Texas for burial there. Cal gets no input into that decision. But to Katherine's credit, she allows a memorial for her son in New York and agrees to attend. It is there the Cal and Katherine must connect and try to move on. The story speaks to many of the fears of that era, just before drugs became widely available to keep HIV patients alive. The performances are very good. If you're interested in a good HIV/AIDS drama from that era, this is worth checking out.
