Dangerous Living: Coming Out in the Developing World
Year:
2003
Country:
USA
Director:
John Scagliotti
Starring:
Janeane Garofalo
Synopsis:
This documentary looks at the risks gays and lesbians take when they come out in the developing world, specifically focusing on the case of 52 men in Cairo who were arrested because they were attending a gay disco on the Nile River.
Quick review:
The most interesting aspect of this documentary for me was learning where the homophobia in most of the developing world came from. Many of these nations had a very long history of same-sex relationships. They were rarely spoken of openly, but most people knew they existed and just looked the other way. Then came Victorian England and the British desire to colonize the world. With them came laws against homosexuality. For the most part, the British are now gone but in far too many cases those laws remain. The central theme of the film is that gay men and lesbians coming out of the closet and being more open -- holding pride parades, banning together to push for equal rights -- has led to a backlash in nations from Central America to Africa to the Middle East and Asia. And often that backlash includes torture and rape. Sometimes it's scary what people of God will do to other people. The film is a reminder of the brave pioneers who fought for gay rights in every country, including the developed nations. They too took risks and have established an environment where it is safe to be out today in the United States and much of Europe. The gay pioneers in this film are helping to create the safe havens in the developing world. Just as there was a reaction to Anita Bryant in the United States and her anti-gay crusade in the 1970s, so is there a backlash to the Cairo 52 that is helping gay rights advance in the developing world. If for no other reason, this film is valuable because it celebrates the lives and struggles of those gay pioneers.
