Fashion Victim: The Killing of Gianni Versace

Year: 2001
Country: USA
Director: James Kent
Starring: Marisa Berenson, Gianni Versace, Andrew Cunanan, Antonio D'Amico, Malcom McLaren
Synopsis: This documentary examines the murder of gay fashion designer Gianni Versace by a troubled young gay man, Andrew Cunanan.
Quick review: There are some moments in U.S. history that all Americans can recall vividly if they lived and were old enough, at that time: O.J.'s flight in the white Bronco, Sept. 9, Dec. 7 for those who are old enough. You can put the killing of Gianni Versace in that class. The days after the murder while the manhunt for Andrew Cunanan was underway had the entire country on edge. As nearly everyone on the planet knows, Gianni Versace was one of the top fashion designers in the world. He was open about his sexual orientation and lived with his partner. Andrew Cunanan was a hustler who lived as a house boy for rich men who spoiled him. But Cunanan was aging, reaching 30, and was beginning to put on weight. The sugar daddies were looking for younger and skinnier boy toys and Cunanan faced a future where he would no longer get by on his looks. He drove to Minnesota to see a former boyfriend, then killed him and his lover. He then drove to Chicago where he apparently stayed (though his friends will dispute this) with a well-connected Chicago man, before brutally killing him. He then drove to New Jersey, and needing a new car, killed a graveyard caretaker for his truck. Then he drove to Miami where he gunned down Versace on the steps of his home. This documentary provides most of the background, but it doesn't dive deep into some of the issues. Did Versace and Cunanan meet before or not? (The film hints yes). What was the nature of that relationship? How well did Cunanan know the Chicago man he killed? Maybe these answers cannot be known, but the film deals with them quickly before moving on. It leaves the questions. The film does offer a good sense of Versace's life and the turmoil within the Versace brand after his death. But in every case, I wanted more. Tell me about the feud between Versace's partner and his sister for control. It mentions it, has a couple people talk about it, but never explores it in depth. That is what a good documentary should do.
