Quick review:
In an era where the lead actors in most gay films camped it up to hit all the stereotypes, Aidan Quinn's portrayal of a closeted gay man is striking. It makes sense, that a closeted man would be so straight acting, but if you look back at the films of this era that wasn't always the case. This is one of the first films to deal with AIDS in a compassionate manner (President Reagan still had not said the word AIDS when this film was broadcast. His first words on the subject were on May 31, 1987). Quinn plays a Chicago lawyer who is happy with his life. He has a strong relationship and he has just been promoted to partner at his law firm. The only aspect of his life that causes him discomfort is that he's not out to his family, more a bone of contention between him and his partner. All that changes when the doctor informs him that he has contracted the AIDS virus. Disbelief turns to anger and he begins lashing out, namely at his partner. He also travels home to finally tell his family that he is gay. There's the usual coming out drama of the family refusing to accept it. But where this film is strongest is in its depiction of the fear everyone had in those early days of AIDS, from a nurse who refuses to give AIDS patients their food, to ambulance drivers who won't transport AIDS patients. It seems hard to comprehend today, but those who lived through those years remember the hysteria that existed. If for no other reason, that alone makes this a good film to rent and watch. The portrayals of the actors are all very good and this is one of the better AIDS dramas.
