Eleven Men Out

Year: 2005
Country: Iceland
Director: Róbert I. Douglas
Starring: Arnaldur Ernst, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, Lilja Nótt Þórarinsdóttir
Synopsis: The best football (soccer) player in Iceland decides to come out as gay. He's thrown off his team and joins a predominantly gay team while he deals with turmoil in his personal life.
Quick review: The brief description sounds like your typical sports cliche film, but they forgot one thing. The sports. If you watch the trailer you'll see just about every minute of sports in this sports film. And since the trailer is just under two minutes, that tells you something. Perhaps shooting sports is too expensive, or they didn't have the talent to pull it off. But anyone looking for some great football action will be very disappointed in this film. Ottar is the top player for the top team in Iceland. He's being interviewed after a game and told that he's not worth the front page. On a whim, he decides to become a front page story by coming out to his team in front of the magazine reporter. I don't know too many gay men or women who have come out on a whim like that. Nevertheless, Ottar has a wife, a son, and parents who must all deal with this turn of events. The father is part of the team that is kicking his son out for being gay. The wife is an alcoholic and the son is going through typical teen-age angst of trying to understand himself. Ottar's new straight teammates don't want to be on the "gay" team. But new gay teammates appear who want to join. Soon they're off playing games (that you'll never see) and starting to play well. Of course, it ends with an exhibition against his former team (which you also will not see). Most of this is material that has been covered before. Still, this is the first gay film I've seen from Iceland so maybe it's all new for that nation. In that case, welcome.
