Our Sons

Year: 1991
Country: USA
Director: John Erman
Starring: Julie Andrews, Ann Margret, Hugh Grant, Zeljko Ivanek
Synopsis: Two mothers of gay sons are brought together when one of them is near death because of AIDS. Both face their child's homosexuality in different ways.
Quick review: This film brought together two legendary actresses, Julie Andrews and Ann Margaret. I watched it in 2009, 18 years after it was first shown. It was a reminder of how much has changed. This film was released at the end of the first wave of AIDS deaths, before researchers found the combination of drugs that would keep HIV positive patients alive. And most of the country had still not accepted homosexuality and had a very difficult time even talking about it. Hugh Grant and Zeljko Ivanek play the gay couple, James and Donald. Donald is sick and dying. James (Grant) asks his mother (Andrews) to reach out to Donald's mother, who lives in a trailer park in Arkansas (yes, the cliches just don't stop). Both mothers had different reactions when they learned their sons where gay. Audrey (Andrews) tried her best to ignore it, but wouldn't let her son go. Luann (Margaret) threw her son out of their home. By talking to each other both women are able to come to terms with their sons' relationship and reconcile in time for Donald to die. My reaction to watching this was that I had forgotten (even though I lived through them) how devastating AIDS was at that time. I had not-so-close friends die from AIDS during the 1980s, but nothing like losing a partner. I think it's a good idea every now and then to watch an AIDS film to remind ourselves.
