Right By Me (Rainbow Boys)

2005
Country:
Thailand
Director:
Thanyatorn Siwanukrow
Starring:
Jackie, Palat Ananwattanasiri, Pimpong Isarasena na Ayudhya, Wijitra Wijiwonnagorn
Synopsis:
Alex Sanchez's classic gay coming-of-age novel gets a Thai twist in this adaptation of his book. Three teens come to terms with their sexual orientation through the help of the Rainbow Club.
Quick review:
This is a bit like an afternoon special (if they still have those anymore), where they use a melodrama to try and explain complex ideas to children. In this case, it would be the terms "closet," "coming out," and "gay." It's a little simplistic, but middle-age gay men are not the target audience. Tat and Nat are both gay and best friends. Nat is out to the world and is obvious to anyone with a clue. Tat passes for straight, being a bit of a jock. He's only out to Nat. They both go to the Rainbow Club meeting for young gay teens, and who should walk in but Tat's dream man, Ek, who is the star of the high school basketball team. Ek plays it like he is in the wrong meeting, that he's only curious, and clings to his beard, um, girlfriend as proof that he is a manly man! Of course he's fooling no one, including Tat, who begins his pursuit. Nat of course is madly in love with Tat, so this turn of events upsets him and that is all you need for the melodrama to begin. Anyone who has seen more than 10 movies knows how it will end. Still, films like this have their purpose and if you're into cute young Asian boys, you could do worse. (Note: The only trailer I can find does not have English subtitles. The version I got from Netflix had the subtitles).
