Were the World Mine
Year:
2008
Country:
USA
Director:
Thomas Gustafson
Starring:
Tanner Cohen, Wendy Robie, Judy McLane, Nathaniel David Becker, Zelda Williams, Christian Stolte, Ricky Goldman
Synopsis:
Students stage a musical version of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" where reality mirrors the plot of the play. The boy playing Puck can make the whole world gay.
Quick review:
Timothy is the gay boy at his high school, often bullied about by his homophobic classmates. He's attracted to the start of the school's rugby team, Jonathan. Their English teacher convinces Timothy to try out for a role in the school's musical. Because this is an all-boys school, they will have to revert to the original productions and cast men in the parts of women. Timothy is cast as Puck, and experiments making his own love potion. But he uses it to make the whole world gay. Soon gay and lesbian couples are everywhere. Of course, like the play, some of the people fall in love with those they were not intended for. And it takes a while to sort all that out before Timothy must choose to remove the love potion that made Jonathan fall in love with him, or to keep living in a dream world. TLA's review is glowing, I didn't find it so. Perhaps it's because I've seen scores of updated Shakespeare stories. But the boys are cute, the music OK. It just went a little too over the top for me in being gay, but I tend to like more serious fare. Those who like whimsy may love this.
