Nighthawks
Year:
1978
Country:
UK
Director:
Ron Peck, Paul Hallam
Starring:
Ken Robertson, Rachel Nicholas James, Robert Merrick, Tony Westrope
Synopsis:
A London school teacher lives his life semi-openly, instructing high school students by day and looking for love by night. This 1978 film billed itself as one of the first to show gays in a positive light.
Quick review:
The only reason to see this film is for its historic importance. While viewers in the United States were sitting through incredibly bad stereotypical gay films like "Norman Is That You?", the Brits were starting to move in a more fair treatment of gays on the screen. Jim teaches at a high school and for the most part keeps to himself. Some of his fellow teachers know that he's gay, but it's not generally known. But Jim doesn't hide it or flaunt it. When an appropriate opportunity comes, he discloses it with no sign of shame. Today, that's nothing. In 1978 it was something. The film is honest in its portrayal of a typical gay man's life, as Jim cruises bars looking for love. He has a few relationships, some of these serious some of them just gratifying. But in his heart he's looking for a partner. A rumor begins to circulate at school that Jim is gay and soon the students have many questions. It gives Jim the chance to answer them, openly and without shame. Today, the film is a bit dated. It even gets a bit annoying because the directors have a couple of scenes of Jim just standing there looking at the camera. One dragged on for more than three minutes as he's in a bar. It makes you realize how long three minutes is in film time. Have your fast forward remote close. But if you're interested in the history of gay cinema, it's worth checking out to see the progress that has been made. Still, "Victim" is a much better movie to see for both gay history and overall quality.
