No Regret (Huhwaehaji Anah)

Year: 2006
Country: South Korea
Director: Hee-il Leesong
Starring: Hyeon-cheol Jo, Nam-gil Kim, Young-hoon Lee
Synopsis: Two young men, one born poor and in the villages and the other a corporate prince from the big city, meet and pursue a relationship, trying to overcome the odds stacked against them because of their social status.
Quick review: One of the traits of a good film is not telegraphing how it will end, letting the audience wonder where this is all going. When you get to the climax of this film that sense of wonder is there. Sumin leaves his small village hoping to carve out a life for himself in Seoul. He works full-time at a factory and part-time driving drunk executives home from a night of partying while he crashes with a friend from his village. He's gay, but has little time for love while he struggles to escape poverty and a life with few prospects. One night the drunk executive he drives home is Jaemin. There is an immediate interest from both men, but despite an invitation to pursue it, Sumin declines. It isn't long before Sumin learns that Jaemin is the son of the owner of his plant. Layoffs occur and Jaemin begins a full fledge pursuit of Sumin, who continues to refuse. Out of work, Sumin takes a job at a gay bathhouse, playing host to rich executives. It isn't long before Jaemin arrives and continues his pursuit. The relationship goes full circle, with Sumin eventually giving in to his desires and then his pursuit of Jaemin begins (he's being forced into a marriage by his parents). There's a little melodrama to the story, but you have beautiful Asian men and a gay bathhouse, plus an ending that puts you on the edge of your seat. This is a good date night film.
