Night Scene

Year: 2004
Country: China
Director: Cui Zi'en
Starring: Gao Yang, Ge Ying Han, Liang Hao Bin, Qiao Bin, Sun Zhao Da
Synopsis: Yangyang follows his father to a market where he discovers dad has a secret life and a young gay lover. It causes him to question his own sexual desires and soon he's in love with a male prostitute.
Quick review: I'm no fan of Chi Zi'en as a director. One thing that hurt him here was I saw two of his films -- this one and "Feeding Boys, Ayaya" -- back to back. It's hard for me to remember which is which. He has some sort of fascination with male prostitutes. Of the two, this one makes less sense. If the plot would have been more like the above description, it might have been a nice family drama. But that storyline lasts all of maybe 10 minutes. The other 65 minutes is all male prostitutes talking about their professions, motivations, experiences. And none of it is groundbreaking. At the 36 minute mark I looked hopefully at my DVD player, hoping beyond hope that it was almost over and shocked that I still had more than half the film to sit through. Spare yourself, skip this one.
