Wild Side

Synopsis: A transgender woman's mother is sick and needs help at her home, so her daughter returns with her two male lovers in this film about an unconventional family.
Quick review: Sylvie is a prostitute and a transgender woman who has fallen in love with a Russian immigrant, Mikhail, in this mood film. But there is still something missing for both of them. Jamel, an Arab street hustler, fills it and the three of them have formed their own family, each carrying a lot of baggage. But it works, and that's what all three of them need. Sylvie's mother is sick and needs help at home, so she travels to the country to take care of her. Soon, her male lovers follow, so the older woman not only faces her dealing with her ignored feelings on her daughter's gender, but also her unconventional relationship. And then there is the fact the two men enjoy each other even when Sylvie is unavailable. It's a nice film on what it takes to make a family, but it's frustrating to watch. It's told primarily in flashbacks, so basics like how did they meet, how did they become a family, aren't told until the end. But as with most French gay films, there are pretty boys having lots of sex to keep you distracted. The film stars an actual transgender woman in the title role, so it's far more believable than many trans films.
