Night Watch (Ronda Nocturna)

Year: 2004
Country: Argentina
Director: Edgardo Cozarinsky
Starring: Gonzalo Heredia, Rafael Ferro, Moro Anghileri
Synopsis: A Buenos Aires street hustler spends one night finding adventures and avoiding the demons of his past.
Quick review: Trying to describe a movie such as this one is an exercise in futility. The intent of the movie is to keep you confused as to what's going on. And confused you will be. People are dying throughout the night and it seems no one notices or cares. What's going on? But if I tell you what it's all about, then it ruins the experience the director intended. So how much to reveal? How much to keep hidden? Victor is a 20-something prostitute and drug dealer working the streets of Buenos Aires. The point of view is his and there are long stretches of this film with no dialogue. It helps that there is plenty of nudity, including full frontal. Throw in some sex and what other excuse do you need to see it? The film is one night in Victor's life, as he goes from one part of town to the next. There is a point to all this meandering, but to reveal it is to ruin it. It's a strange, very different story with cute young men running around naked. And even though it can be confusing, there is an "ahah" moment at the end that explains it all.
