Hard Pill

Year: 2005
Country: USA
Director: John Baumgartner
Starring: Jonathan Slavin, Scotch Ellis Loring, Susan Slome, Beth Grant, Alec Mapa
Synopsis: Tim is a lonely gay man who is tired of his lifestyle. A new company has developed a pill that it says can change a gay man into a straight man. Tim decides to become one of its test subjects.
Quick review: Tim is a bit of a sad case. He has known that he's gay for most of his life and is out to everyone. Still, he's not happy. He is tired of the hookups and anonymous encounters and wants a more meaningful relationship, something he believes he can't find in the gay world. He's in love with a straight friend, who with some coaxing is willing to let Tim suck him off, so long as they are watching straight porn. His best gal friend is hopelessly in love with him, and does little to hide it. There's also a new man at the office who intrigues Tim, but no one seems to know if he's straight or gay. Sick of it all, Tim hears about a new pill developed by a pharmaceutical company that claims it can turn gay men into straight men. It's looking for test subjects and Tim signs up. The film is devoted to the consequences of that decision, both the changes it causes to Tim as well as to his friends. The best gal pal now believes she has a chance for the man of her dreams and a life filled with happy ever after. His best gay pal starts to question his own lifestyle, which has been filled with meaningless encounters. Is he ready for more? How about his straight buddy? Now that Tim is also straight, can they hang out as straight men without the occasional blow job? And what of the new women in Tim's life? And will this miracle pill last? It's an interesting topic to explore and the film adds a nice touch with a built-in gaydar, that lets the audience know where most people are. This is a good film to watch with someone you enjoy debating more serious issues with.
