Quick review:
I saw this with a friend at DC's Reel Affirmations Gay Film Festival. We had mixed reactions as we left the theater. On the one hand you want to love this film because of its originality and its break with many of gay film cliches. How many films really dive into a gay relationship in this manner? Not many that I've seen. And yet, there was something troubling both of us. There's the melodrama, an ending that makes your stomach churn and two phony lead characters (one is all good, walks on water, etc., the other is a true pain in the ass). A little more shades of gray would have been appreciated. So my friend and I disagreed on how to rank this. He wanted a lower ranking, but after seeing hundreds of gay films, originality always appeals to me. Kyle and Marcel meet at a bar and hit it off immediately. The early lust becomes deep love and before you know it, they're talking marriage. But then trouble arrives in the form of Kyle's sister, April. They have a complicated relationship and soon the jealous April leads her brother away from his true love. And that's when it really gets nasty between the two lovers. There are lots of musical numbers, but few songs you'll remember past the credits. I recommend it strictly for the originality. (Oh, and the nudity).
