Vereda Tropical

Year: 2004
Country: Brazil
Director: Javier Torre
Starring: Alejandro Baratelli, Fabio Aste, MimĂ ArdĂș
Synopsis: This is based on the life of Manuel Puig, the author of "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and other novels. This film covers a very brief span of his life, after he's become a success.
Quick review: I'm not sure how accurate this film is to the real life of the author from Argentina, but you get a pretty good sense of the man even if you know little to nothing about him. This is an honest look at a man's life, warts and all. It's hard to like Puig, watching this film. He's spoiled and just a bit creepy with his pursuit of a much younger straight man. And it's a bit sad to watch. Puig is one of the most successful writers to emerge on the international stage from Argentina, but he spent most of his life in exile. This film is set in Rio de Janeiro and only covers a few months of his life there. He's already a successful writer who has little to do but entertain himself every day. He has a secret lover, but his lover is married and has made it very clear that he's never going to leave his wife. Manuel has a nasty habit of taping his sex sessions so that he can use the role playing in bed in his literature. And just for kicks there's a pretty young thing doing some painting in the neighborhood that he desires, but the boy is straight and has no intention of giving in to his obvious manipulations. Throw in a Argentine literary expert and a best gal pal and you have a movie. Yes, it meanders and you will hardly have a great impression of the author when it is over. But it takes guts to make an honest film and show someone as they were. I don't know how accurate it is, but you get the feeling it was probably pretty close because you see both the good and the bad of the man.
