Quick review:
Julie Johnson is a housewife in Hoboken, N.J. who has a secret. No, not that she's a lesbian. But we'll get to that. Her secret is that she loves all things science and desperately wants a change in her life, but she's not sure what exactly. Her husband Rick is not very supportive. When Julie asks if she can take a computer class at the local college, he tells her no, they can't afford it. He likes his traditional life, where she takes care of the house and the children and he brings home the money. But Julie defies him and takes the computer class. She soon learns, despite her lack of education, that she's a bit of a math whiz. And she figures out computer programming faster than her classmates, which impresses her teacher. Eventually this leads to a breakup with Rick, who leaves Julie and the kids, figuring being on her own will force Julie back to the traditional life he craves. But Julie has other ideas. After some initial concerns for how she's going to pay the bills, Julie begins to enjoy life on her own. And when her best friend Claire leaves her husband and moves in with them, it's even better. Julie finally confesses to Claire her attraction and you can guess where the story goes from there. There's much to enjoy in this film, because it feels like it could be a story taking place in any community around the world. The fact that Julie and Claire are in different places and have different ambitions helps make this feel like a film that could be based on a true story. And the fact that Julie is able to find herself and make her own way in life is an inspiring story.
