Taxi Zum Klo (Taxi to the Toilet)

Year: 1980
Country: Germany
Director: Frank Ripploh
Starring: Frank Ripploh, Orpha Termin, Bernd Broaderup, Peter Fahrni, Dieter Godde
Synopsis: Frank Ripploh was a school teacher by day, gay man by night. One day those two worlds met with huge consequences in this autobiographical film, staring Frank Ripploh.
Quick review: This is one of the stranger films you're ever going to see. Frank Ripploh worked as an elementary school teacher in Germany, and while many suspected he was gay, he never came out and told everyone. He successfully kept his gay life and teacher life apart. This film details how that changed in an up-close manner that is a bit disturbing to see. It stars the writer and the director, and is unflinchingly honest in his profile of a gay man living in the 1970s. At times, too honest. For that reason it's not always east to like Frank, or his many sex acts. Viewer beware, some of these acts are not for everyone, including water sports. Frank meets a great guy and it appears he might be headed toward a relationship. But he's not interested in monogamy. This is pre-AIDS gay life, where sex was easy to come by and often practiced. His new boyfriend doesn't approve, but puts up with it. At one point, despite being hospitalized, Frank takes a taxi to, you guessed it, a public bathroom to has sex. Hence the title. On many levels, it's sad. With each step forward Frank gets closer and closer to the meltdown that will have him decide to leave teaching for a career in filmmaking. Was this film 100 percent an honest portrayal of Ripploh's life? Unlikely. But, there is so much in it that I sure wouldn't be proud of, that it's a lot more honest a look at a gay man's life in the 1970s than many would make about themselves. And for that reason, even though it can be difficult to watch at times, it's fascinating to look at.
