Ritz, The

Year: 1976
Country: USA
Director: Richard Lester
Starring: Jack Weston, Rita Moreno, Treat Williams, F. Murray Abraham, Kaye Ballard, Jerry Stiller
Synopsis: A straight man decides to hide from his brother-in-law, who is determined to kill him, by staying at a gay bathhouse in New York City.
Quick review: If you consider the times, this film was way ahead of the other gay movies released in the mid-1970s. Yes, it deals in some of the stereotypes, but overall, it's far kinder to gay men than most of the other films of the period. And that has a lot to do with its source material, a hit Broadway show written by gay playwright Terrance McNally. Gaetano Proclo is a straight, married Cleveland businessman with a pretty dull life. That changes when his father-in-law dies. Just before departing the world, he gives his son an order to kill Gaetano because he doesn't want him inherited a slice of the family business (mob connections are obvious). Fearing for his life, Gaetano heads for New York and tells the taxi driver to take him to the last place anyone would expect to find him. Which is The Ritz, a gay bathhouse. But of course he's tracked by a private investigator (a hunky and very young looking Treat Williams), who was paid to get caught in a compromising position with the unsuspecting Gaetano. And there are the usual farce elements, including the fabulous Rita Moreno playing a woman who everyone thinks is a drag queen. Throw in a chubby chaser and a terrific over-the-top performance by F. Murray Abraham, and it's a lot of fun. Jerry Siller plays the brother-in-law and Jack Weston (veteran character actor, most of you born before 1980 will know him when you see him) is the star. Farces can be a lot of fun and this film offers a rare fair treatment of gays when most films of the time did not. So it's worth checking out.
