Quick review:
So many movies are the same tired plots or same tired situations. It is refreshing when you come across a film that is something new and different, and yet done well. This fits that category. Two young men, both gorgeous of course, are sent to prison and have little hope of ever leaving. One is soft and naive, and the other tough and street smart. Yeah, that doesn't sound too original. But in the hands of director Takashi Miike he makes this film like nothing you've seen before. It's stunning and a treat to watch. The plot starts at the end, and then takes us back through what happened before. We know right away it will end in tragedy for the young lovers. But we're not sure how that tragedy came about or why. And that is the mystery that keeps you hooked through the end. This film won't be for everyone. It is a foreign language film and artistic in nature. It is highly stylized. But for many of us, it is art, so we can forgive pyramids suddenly showing up in the middle of a prison for no apparent reason. It's a tender, gay love story set in a brutal place. And if you love artistic films, it's worth checking out.
