29th & Gay

Year: 2005
Country: USA

Synopsis: James is celebrating his 29th birthday and having a bit of a mid-life crisis: His acting career is going nowhere and he hasn't had a date in more than a year.
Quick review: With every low-budget film that appears in my DVD player I feel a tinge of anxiety. Will this be the one that displays a bright young talent who just doesn't have the funding right now? Will I see something original and so off-the-wall I'm going to love it? Or is there a reason it's a low-budget production and I'm going to regret ever placing it in my Netflix queue? 29th & Gay is definitely a low-budget film, but big enough to get some real actors. James Vasquez wrote the script and stars as the man trying to figure out his life. It's nice to see Latinos making more gay films and there is definitely a touch of originality to this film. The friends and family of James help him celebrate his 29th birthday, but James is filled with his own anxiety. The dreaded 30th birthday is looming and he still hasn't become a successful actor or landed Mr. Right. James narrates the audience through his past failed romances. A really nice scene comes when he joins a friend to go get an HIV test, and the nurse chews him out for wasting her time when he doesn't even have a sex life. James does hope to date. In fact, he's got a major crush on the new waiter at the coffee shop, but acts like a bumbling idiot every time he sees him. And on that level, this film succeeds. Nearly everyone has dealt with the fears that James is experiencing and can relate. But in many ways, that is what makes this film so predictable. We've seen it all before.
