Bathhouse

Year: 2004
Country: Philippines
Director: Crisaldo Pablo
Starring: Andoy Ranay, John Lapuz, Rey Pumaloy
Synopsis: A nerdy college student looks for love in all the wrong places, especially a gay bathhouse more interested in lust than love.
Quick review: Any film about a bathhouse leads to certain expectations. This one is different. First, it's very low budget and that comes through in the quality. The lighting is bad and the acting is over the top. There is also not as much nudity as you might expect from a gay bathhouse movie. But what hits you about this film is what you don't expect. It's a look at gay lifestyle that many gays may not be comfortable examining. Rico is a college student who is just coming out. He's days away from telling his family. The one thing that Rico wants, is to fall in love. He doesn't want the a different anonymous sex partner every night circus that many gay men he knows practice. Rico meets an older man on the bus, Cris. He's cute and he gives Rico a discount to get into a gay bathhouse. Rico goes, hoping to meet Cris and pursue a relationship. But Cris is the biggest player at the bathhouse. Everyone wants him, and he's had just about everyone. He boasts of more than 2,000 sex partners. There you have your conflict. The young up-and-comer Rico looking for love in a bathhouse and pursing a player who is not too far away from being too old for most of the boys he chases. The film looks at what gay men want, is it sex or a relationship? Do they have it in them to commit to a relationship? What happens when the tables are turned and the one everyone once wanted is now the troll they avoid? These are all great angles to pursue and it would have been nice if filmmaker Crisaldo Pablo had a bigger budget to do them justice. The low budget is hard to ignore and detracts from the film.
