American Adobo

Year: 2001
Country: Philippines
Director: Laurice Guillen
Starring: Paolo Montalban, Randy Becker, Christopher De Leon, Dina Bonnevie, Ricky Davao, Cherrie Pie Picache, Keesha Sharp, Sandy Andolong
Synopsis: Five Filipino friends -- including a gay man -- deal with a variety of issues in this film that feels more like a soap opera than major feature movie.
Quick review: I've now seen maybe a half dozen gay films from the Philippinesand I'd say they are about 20 years behind the United States in dealing with gay issues. Take this film, for example. The gay character is Gerry, an advertising executive. He's deep in the closet and has to face the possibility of losing his lover to AIDS. If that doesn't take you back ... The premise of the story is based on five college friends who all met while living in the Philippines, but are now living in the United States. Adobo is the national dish of the Philippines, and the filmmaker has fun using that throughout the course of the film. Gerry is not the only member of the group with problems. Tere is loved by all, but is still a virgin and can't seem to attract a man. She's beginning to lose hope of every marrying. Marissa is the ultimate socialite who puts on a brave face, but faces a crisis at home with her live-in boyfriend Sam, who seems more interested in Marissa's money than her body. Mike and Gigi are married, but it's not a happy marriage. They make each other miserable. And then there is Raul, who will be the gay favorite in the film. He's gorgeous and a big-time player, albeit straight. But he begins to worry that all his sleeping around may be doing him harm when an ex-lover sends a note that she's HIV positive and Raul should go get tested. The gay angle is painful to watch. Gerry shows genuine love for Chris, but does everything to hide their relationship. That includes flying to the Philippineson the spur of the moment to intercept a package to his mother that would reveal his true nature. Overall, the film holds your interest and I could look at Paolo Montalban, who plays Raul, all day. But the mini-dramas with predictable endings made this feel like a soap opera in film form.
