An Awfully Big Adventure

Year: 1994
Country: UK
Director: Mike Newell
Starring: Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Peter Firth, Georgina Cates, Alan Cox
Synopsis: A girl decides the best way to learn how to become a woman is to sign on as a worker at the local theater company. That's when all hell breaks loose.
Quick review: Hugh Grant plays gay -- again. He's the chain-smoking director of a Liverpool theater in 1947 and one of the least lovable gay characters in film history. He's a bit of a bully who likes to torment those who have fallen in love with him, both male and female. One such girl is 15-year-old Stella, an orphan hired to work at the theater. She refuses to understand all the signs that indicate the love of her life is a flaming queen, much less a bastard. He can do no wrong in her eyes. This film is all about Stella and her journey at the theater company. She meets no end of eccentric characters, including an aging actor who has never met a woman he didn't want to bed. This film has a terrific cast and is unlike many films you see, but it goes off in some strange directions that I did not want to follow. The ending seems a bit melodramatic and forced.
