As Luck Would Have It
Year:
2003
Country:
Switzerland
Director:
Lorenzo Gabriele
Starring:
Jean-Claude Brialy, Julien Bravo, Sabine Haudepin
Synopsis:
In Switzerland, the government can force any citizen to become a foster guardian. Even a closeted gay man desperate to hide who he is.
Quick review:
Jean-Pierre is a college professor so desperate to keep the world from learning that he's gay that he married his best female friend once just so he could tell everyone he's married. And, to hide that he's gay he forces his male lover to leave early every morning before the housemaid arrives and learns the truth. His secretive life faces its biggest obstacle when a judge points to his name in a phone book and gives him custody of 17-year-old Antonin. Neither the boy nor the guardian are excited by this pairing, which is legal in Switzerland when no volunteers are available. And both take steps to try and get out of the arrangement. And you just know that in the end they'll discover they are perfect for each other and the movie with have the stereotypical happy ending. What I liked about this film is the lead, Jean-Pierre, is an older man with gray hair and an expanding waistline. Too few gay films show the diversity of the community and limit themselves to current and former Abercrombie & Fitch models. That, and the film has a good heart despite its lack of surprises. But yet, you know how the plot is going to play out 10 minutes into the film. One word to the twink lovers who see the DVD cover and decide to rent the movie to see the teen on the cover. He's straight in the film and his only sex experience in the movie is with his girlfriend.
