Aishite Imasu 1941 (Mahal Kita 1941)
Year:
2004
Country:
Philippines
Director:
Joel Lamangan
Starring:
Judy Ann Santos, Raymart Santiago, Jay Manalo
Synopsis:
The residents of a small Filipino village try to survive and fight back after their country is overrun by the Japanese during World War II.
Quick review:
The day the Japanese land on this Filipino island and take over the village Ignacio (Raymart Santiago) is dressed up as a woman and signing. The new Japanese commander is immediately taken by the person he calls Inya. The villagers convince Ignacio to play the role of a woman full time so that he can spy on the invaders and assist the resistance. What they don't count on is Ignacio falling in love with his suitor. This is a film that examines love of country and love of the heart, and how the two can possibly conflict. Santiago does an excellent job in a complicated role. The film does tend to get a bit melodramatic at points, but it does offer a touching gay romance story of sacrifice and betrayal.
