All About My Mother (Todo Sobre Mi Madre)

Synopsis: After the sudden death of her teen-age son, a mother leaves Madrid for Barcelona to confront the father of her child, a person who never knew he had a son. Along the way, she faces other demons from her past.
Quick review: One of the better films from one of the top gay directors in movie history. Cecilia Roth is excellent playing the mother whose world comes crashing down when her teen-age son dies. She quits her job and sets out for a new life, but first must confront the boy's father, who never knew he had a son. The film deals with many transgender issues, including two trans women. There is also an underlying lesbian relationship between Manuela, the mother, and Rosa, a young nun who is pregnant and HIV positive. (Yes, Almodovar loves to torture nuns in his movies, see Dark Habits). During the film Almodovar pays homage to two of his favorites, the film All About Eve and the stage production of Tennessee William's A Stagecar Named Desire. This is a melodrama told in a classic manner with an excellent cast. And it highlights many of the themes you expect to find in an Almodovar film. I'd still say 'Bad Education' is his best work to date, but this one is right up there.
