Quick review:
This may have been the first U.S. film to show the inside of a gay bar. And as shocking as that must have been to American audiences in 1962, you'll be shocked by this movie. It's very sophisticated and complex. It stars a ensemble cast of top-notch actors and it's surprising how little screen time Henry Fonda receives. The president has nominated a controversial candidate for Secretary of State. Senator Brigham Anderson is asked to lead the committee to conduct the hearings. There's lot of political intrigue and deals that will satisfy any fan of the TV series West Wing. There are rumors of a Communist past in the nominee. There are lies and blackmail. And when Anderson decides he won't allow the nominee to advance, he discovers that he's become a blackmail victim. It is a 1960s gay movie, so the one thing you know for certain is that it won't end well for the gay characters. And it doesn't. That's about the only reason I didn't give it five triangles. This movie has more going for it more than 40 years after it debuted than most modern-day movies have today.
