Quick review:
The hardest part of writing a review about this movie has to be the same problem that faced literary critics who reviewed Charles Dicken's Pickwick Papers. What is it about? I don't know, and it's obvious neither did Royston Tan, the writer and director. However, Pickwick Papers works because there are a series of unrelated adventures that keep you interested. Here, we have five teens who sit around complaining about life, comparing their many tattos, graphic scenes of self-mutilation and piercings. Oh, and it seems nearly every teen in Singapore is in a rush to commit suicide. There seems to be homosexual undertones throughout the movie, but they never become overt. That said, it's a fast-moving film with some interesting techniques that tries to be cutting edge. Sometimes they work, other times they don't. And at times, it's too fast moving. I was able to watch this film on tape, so I could pause it to read the subtitles. I feel sorry for those who see it in a theater, because there are some subtitles that cross the entire screen and you have to read them in less than a second.
